(Literally, things made without hands)
is an experiment in collaboration.
It is an attempt to minimise my interference in the coming-into-being of the work.
Further, to ask… by this distance can the interference be measured?
Which in turn provokes the question:
How might we know the source of that which we make?
Having been called to summon the piece I have tried to limit the extent of my physical hunger to create. The process was difficult since I am trained to fulfil these appetites.
The materials having presented themselves
… "the blessed things that have taken on what is cursed and the profane things that are somehow redeemed: the delights and also the 'ornaments', both in the primary sense of gear and paraphernalia and in the sense of what simply adorns; the donated and votive things, the things dedicated after whatever fashion, the things made in some sense separate, being 'laid up from other things'; things, or some aspect of them, that partake of the extra-utile and of the gratuitous; things that are the sign of something other, together with those signs that not only have the nature of the sign, but are themselves, under some mode, what they signify. Things set up, lifted up, or in whatever manner made over to the Gods."[p29 of the Faber 1972 ed. of Anathemata, by David Jones]
I gave them the opportunity to complete themselves, or to begin the process of completion…
"What occurs to me addresses me. In what occurs to me the world-happening addresses me. Only by sterilising it, removing the seed of address from it, can I take what occurs to me as part of the world-happening which does not refer to me."[p.28 of Collins'1979 ed. Of Between Man and Man, by Martin Buber]
Being on this site means the process continues, away from my hands.
